The Dish That Makes It Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. For many households, the dish that makes the day feel familiar is not the turkey. It is the side someone insists must be on the table, the dessert made from a handwritten card, or the recipe a relative measures by memory.

Our first kitchen feature starts with an invitation: tell us which dish belongs to your family’s Thanksgiving. A recipe can carry the story of a place, a person or a holiday spent far from home. It can also be a new tradition, created when different families bring their own ideas to the same table.

Build a recipe worth passing on

If you would like to contribute, write down the ingredients with quantities, preparation steps, cooking temperature, approximate cooking time and number of servings. Identify ingredients readers may need to check for allergies. Tell us what makes the dish meaningful, and whether you created the recipe or adapted it from another source.

A photograph of your finished dish helps readers picture the result. Please send your own photograph and confirm permission to publish it. We review submissions before selecting a recipe; no reader recipe has been selected for this launch article.

Plan for the leftovers

USDA advises refrigerating perishable leftovers within two hours, or within one hour when temperatures are above 90°F. Smaller, shallow containers help food cool quickly. Check USDA guidance for storage and reheating rather than judging safety by smell alone.
